Opening/Closing Procedures

Opening Procedures

  • Turn on the overhead lights (lightswitch behind the microwave), and the foyer light (lightswitch by the soldering workbench)

  • Unlock/open the lift door beside the main desk, which provides access to the parking garage, restroom, and inventory room.

  • Unlock/open the inventory room door.

  • Unlock the deadbolt on the restroom, using the key in the right drawer of the front desk.

  • Users will still need the 5816 door code to enter; the keypad and deadbolt are separate locks.

  • Turn on the laptop on the main desk.

  • Log in with the password “community1234”.

  • Log in to capitolhill.myturn.com to prepare for patron checkouts/checkins.

  • Retrieve the Donations Jar from behind the desk.

  • The two sandwich boards should be taken to their outdoor locations (one on each corner of our block of Crawford Place).

    • Do NOT place these on the sidewalk in the way of foot traffic.
  • Turn on the large air filter above the foyer. The remote is in the front desk’s right drawer.

  • Turn on the shop TV to input HDMI 1, so that it displays the Task Todos Slack list.

  • Volunteers should don their name tags. Blanks are available in the blue bin under the front desk.

  • If it’s cold outside, turn on the heater to “comfort zone”; the knob for the heater on the wall above the workbench, near the front desk

  • During warm weather, the large garage door (facing the alleyway) can optionally be unlocked and opened for air circulation.

  • The door shouldn’t be raised more than 3 feet, to prevent people from walking off the ledge.

  • The garage door must be closed before 7:00 pm to avoid disturbing neighbors.

Closing Procedures
To close up the library, reverse all opening procedures, plus:

  • Check to be certain that nobody is left in the restroom or inventory room before locking those areas.

  • Make sure that the table saw’s arming switch is turned to “off,” and that all of the other large shop power tools are physically unplugged from power.

  • Cash exceeding $10 should be moved from the donation jar to the lockbox.

    • Since this is a public document we’re purposefully excluding information about the lockbox, but ask your fellow volunteers for location and access information.
