Replacing Stolen Keypads

August (a.k.a. Yale), the keypad manufacturer, will replace stolen keypads for free. They say they charge shipping, but haven't charged us in the past.

Order A Replacement

To replace a stolen lock:

  • Open the August app
    • Click the "Settings" tab
    • Click the "Keypad Settings" for the door that had its keypad stolen (it may take a while to load as it tries and fails to connect with the stolen keypad).
    • Write down the "Serial Number" for future reference.
  • File a new police report.
    • Select "Theft" as the type of crime.
    • Use this example police report as a guide on how to fill in the remaining questions.
    • Save the PDF of the report for future use.
  • Fill out the August contact form, explaining that our keypad was stolen. Below is an example contact message:

Subject: Stolen August Keypad

Description of Request: Good evening,

Someone snuck into our parking garage and stole the August keypad locking out the utility storage area last week (Serial Number K2GXA000Y3).

We can provide a police report and original proof of purchase. Can you please provide a replacement?

Thanks,
Max

  • August support will respond within a day. Respond to them and:
    • attach the report you downloaded earlier
    • attach the screenshot of a previous August purchase below. A screenshot of any August keypad purchase works. Please ask in Slack for another purchase screenshot if August rejects the one you provide.
    • ask them to ship the order to your address. Previously they have generated an order and sent it to the original purchaser's address.

  • If they accept, they will send a separate confirmation email. Please follow the instructions in the confirmation email to complete the order.

Set Up The Replacement Keypad

Setting up the replacement keypad involves linking it with the lock that had its keypad stolen, and re-adding the keycodes to the replacement keypad for all users. If you're not an August admin, ask an @august-admins in Slack to complete the following steps:

  • Follow the "Set up in the App" portion of August's "How To Install: Smart Keypad" help article to link your keypad to the smart lock that had its keypad stolen.
  • Manually re-add the keycodes for the new keypad for all users. In the August app, click the "Guest List" tab. For each user:
    • click the user
    • click "Entry Code" for a lock that was not replaced.
    • click "Manage Entry Code"
    • select the code and copy it
    • press back
    • click "Entry Code" for the lock that was replaced
    • paste in the entry code you copied earlier, and save it. Sometimes August freezes up when saving. If it hangs, back out into the "Guest List", and try updating the user's entry again.
  • After completing this step for all users, click through each user again and confirm that they have "Entry Code: On" for the lock that was stolen. It's an error-prone process, and easy to miss people as you go through the list the first time.
